Racism

Many of you are choosing for essay five to write about racism as an issue in America. While we came to consensus, it seemed, in class that racism and racist ideas still exist in American Society, we were at a loss as to how to deal with it finally - to eradicate it. Education seems to be an important step, in the many years since the civil rights movement, necessary in eliminating racism. But, let's localize things a bit more...Do you feel that our treatment and celebration of diversity on Cortland's campus has eradicated racism on this campus? Do you wonder if there are people who hate others for no valid reason in your immediate neighborhood (ie: your room, floor, dorm, classes)? Or, do you feel comfortable knowing that we all respect each other here at Cortland?

  1. I believe racism will always exist to some extent no matter where you go. Some people are just raised with that racist trait in them. It has always been a controversal issue in American society for many years. Education and expressing the issues can lead to major steps in reducing and eliminatating the problem. Cortland does a good job trying to create diversity and eradicating racism by holding various cultural events on campus. It gives the chance for many cultures to interact with one another and see things from different perspectives. This leads to people not making the pervious assumptions they may once have had about a certain race. I feel comfortable knowing that we all repect each other here at Cortland because of the tight community this college offers. Everyone from the professors to the students, are extremely friendly and helpful towards one another. It's definitely a lot different than living on Long Island, that's for sure.

  2. I feel that the SUNY Cortland campus is very diverse. Their are all different kinds of people here, that come from many different backgrounds and along with that have many different outlooks. I feel comfortable saying that we all respect each other on Cortland's campus. However, I do feel that that their are people who hate others for no valid reason. I feel this is due to stereotypes and their own insecurities. I think that racism will exist no matter where you go, due to the way people were brought up and the fact that sometimes it can be hard to change people's views on certain topics. But I do think with education it is a problem that can be fixed, and if people are more conscious about how they treat others it will be easier to not set prejudice.

  3. The SUNY Cortland campus is filled with diversity for everyone to see. By all of the programs/treatment and celebrations that this campus has it shows a great deal of diversity that some seem to take interest in, and that some seem to just ignore. I feel all of these treatments eradicated racism slightly on this campus because many people go to all of these events, which means they have an open mind and are willing to accept other people based on culture, race, etc. I really do wonder that there are many people around this campus that do hate others based on their diverse selves, and even their race. I actually do know people on this campus who still do hate based on race. It is such a shame because everyone should be treated equally no matter what race they claim to be. I know that there are many people who respect everyone no matter what race they are, and I am one of those people rather being that person who is stuck in the past and just contunues to hold grudges on other people solely because the color of their skin, or the traditions they follow.

  4. Personally I haven't seen any racism going on at campus at all. The only real racist thing that I have seen is stereotypes, but I've seen it with my friends and it is only a harmless joke that no one takes to heart. Overall I believe that SUNY Cortland is a very diverse campus and no one disrespects each other because of race. I've seen people hate each other before on campus before, but that is because of other reasons way different from race. The only racist thing I have come across though is my friends roommates father. His father is foreign and of a different race and for some reason he hates white people. Although he is not racist to us or white people to their face, the things he says are pretty mean and racist. I personally don't take these things to heart, but it makes me realize that racism is still around in the world today.

  5. I feel like here at Cortland everyone seems to respect each other pretty equally. There are many different programs that have to do with culture, which i thinks help promote other cultures and helps others learn new ideas from others. Which can help them understand others better and help them gain more respect.Yes I think that neighbors hate each other for no reason, because that is just how todays society is. But yes there is enough respect between others for me to be comfortable here at Cortland.

  6. Here at SUNY Cortland, The office of multicultural life and diversity and other clubs and staff have put forth various initiatives and programs on educating people, thus erasing the hate that comes from ignorance. However I believe there is no eradicating racism anywhere. I believe the best we can do is educate those who offend people, that way instead of arguing about how they're wrong, we can understand why they feel they way they do and change their perspective on the matter. I believe that there are some people on campus that hate others for no valid reason but thats inevitable. However, I believe that most of the students here are mature enough to not disrespect people for no valid reason.

  7. I think that we are lucky to live on a campus that tries to diversify the way ours does. However, no matter what there will always be racism present. The reason for this is that it is hard to change the opinions of adults, because it is what they were taught to believe. Luckily I haven't really encountered or heard about any major instances of racism, but I believe they do occur on our campus.
